Mike Gilmore President and Chief Executive Officer
Michael S. Gilmore is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Red Cedar Investment Management (a subsidiary of Delta Dental of Michigan and Ohio) and has 23 years of investment related experience. Mr. Gilmore rejoined Delta Dental of Michigan and created Red Cedar Investment Management in 2013 after working for two years at a Registered Investment Advisor in East Lansing, MI. Mr. Gilmore previously worked at Delta Dental of Michigan, serving as Director, Automotive Accounts and Labor Market Relations from 2007 to 2010, and Manager, Investments from 2003 to 2007. Prior to joining Delta Dental of Michigan, Mr. Gilmore worked for Lyon Street Asset Management, a subsidiary of Old Kent Bank, which was acquired by Fifth Third Bank, where he served in various capacities, including Fund Manager, Institutional Portfolio Manager, and Investment Analyst. Prior to working at Lyon Street, Mr. Gilmore played professional hockey for two years in the New York Rangers system.
Mr. Gilmore earned both his MBA, Finance, and B.S. Engineering from Michigan State University, where he was a four-year letter winner, team captain and Academic All-American ice hockey player. Mr. Gilmore currently serves on the nine-member Retirement Board for the Municipal Employees’ Retirement System (MERS) of Michigan, where he is one of two public members and member of the Investment Committee. Mr. Gilmore also serves on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee for the Capital Region Community Foundation, as well as the Board of Directors for Impression 5 Science Center, Ele’s Place-Lansing Community Board, and Cap City Athletic 1847 youth sport organization.
John Cassady III, CFA Chief Investment Officer
John L. Cassady III is the Chief Investment Officer for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 28 years of investment experience. Prior to that, he was an investment professional for ClearArc Capital where he served in varying roles from 2001- 2018, including Director of Fixed Income and Senior Portfolio Manager. While at ClearArc Capital, Mr. Cassady managed Core Fixed Income, Core Plus Fixed Income, Asset Allocation and a multi-sector low correlation strategy. Before joining ClearArc Capital, he held a similar position at Lyon Street Asset Management, a subsidiary of Old Kent Bank, which was acquired by Fifth Third Bank (an affiliated company of ClearArc Capital). Previously, he was a fixed income Portfolio Manager at Atlantic Portfolio Analytics & Management (APAM) which has since been acquired by Semper Capital Management. He is a CFA® charterholder and member of the CFA Society West Michigan. Mr. Cassady graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Industrial Management.
Jill Meendering Executive Assistant
Jill V. Meendering is an Executive Assistant for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 20 years of related experience. Her various responsibilities include marketing preparation, coordinating committee management meetings and preparing monthly data for compliance review. Prior to joining Red Cedar Investment Management, she worked in a similar position at ClearArc Capital. Mrs. Meendering has an Associate’s degree in Applied Science, Accounting.
David Withrow, CFA Director of Portfolio Management
David L. Withrow is the Director of Portfolio Management for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 29 years of investment experience. Previously, Mr. Withrow served as the President, Deputy Chief Investment Officer and Director of Taxable Fixed Income for ClearArc Capital. Prior to joining ClearArc Capital, he served in a Portfolio Management role beginning in 1999 for Fifth Third Bank Investment Advisors (an affiliated company). Before joining Fifth Third Bank Investment Advisors, he was a Portfolio Manager and Structured Product Analyst for Prime Capital Management in Indianapolis. He is a member of the Cincinnati Society of Financial Analysts and serves on the Finance Committee for the Cooperative for Education in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Withrow graduated from Anderson University with a B.A. in Economics and is a CFA® charterholder.
Michael Martin, CFA Senior Portfolio Manager
Michael J. Martin is a Senior Portfolio Manager for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 24 years of investment experience. Previously, he was the Director of Credit Research and Investment Risk Oversight for ClearArc Capital (a subsidiary of Fifth Third Bank). Prior to that, he served as the Director of Tax Free Fixed Income at Lyon Street Asset Management, a subsidiary of Old Kent Bank, which was acquired by Fifth Third Bank. He is a CFA® charterholder and member of the CFA Society West Michigan. Mr. Martin graduated from Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in Geological Engineering and received an MBA from Michigan State University.
Jason Schwartz, CFA Senior Portfolio Manager
Jason M. Schwartz is a Senior Portfolio Manager for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 15 years of investment experience. Prior to joining Red Cedar, he served in various roles at ClearArc Capital including his latest position as Senior Portfolio Manager. His responsibilities comprised several investment strategies over time including multi-sector, Core Plus Fixed Income, Core Fixed Income and Intermediate Government Credit Fixed Income. In addition, Mr. Schwartz was head of securitized products research and trading responsible for oversight of the firm’s entire Asset-Backed Securities (ABS), Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) and Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities (CMBS) portfolio. He also supported the risk management function by providing the firm with derivatives and hedging analysis. He is a member of the Cincinnati Society of Financial Analysts. Mr. Schwartz graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky with a B.B.A. in Finance and is a CFA® charterholder.
Patricia Younker Senior Portfolio Manager
Patricia Younker is a Senior Portfolio Manager for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 31 years of investment experience. She is responsible for the management of Tax-Exempt and Taxable Fixed Income accounts. Prior to joining Red Cedar Investment Management, she held a similar position at ClearArc Capital from 2001- 2018. Previously, she served as a Portfolio Manager at Lyon Street Asset Management, a subsidiary of Old Kent Bank, which was acquired by Fifth Third Bank (an affiliated company of ClearArc Capital). Her previous experience includes working as a Tax-Exempt Money Market Trader and as a Fixed Income Trader. Mrs. Younker graduated from Davenport University with a Bachelor of Applied Science.
Julia Batchenko, CFA Portfolio Manager
Julia Batchenko is a Portfolio Manager for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 10 years of investment experience. Prior to joining Red Cedar, she served as Portfolio Analyst at Bahl & Gaynor Investment Counsel working on small and medium cap income growth equity strategies. Previously, Mrs. Batchenko worked at ClearArc Capital (a wholly owned subsidiary of Fifth Third Bank) as an Investment Research Analyst covering large cap income growth equity strategies. Prior to joining ClearArc Capital, she worked as an Associate Wealth Management Advisor at Fifth Third Bank. Her prior experience also includes serving as a Plan Administrator at Great American Financial Resources and an Account Specialist at Union Center Insurance and Investment Company. Mrs. Batchenko is a CFA® charterholder and received a M.A. in Translation from Kent State University, as well as an MBA with a concentration in Finance from Xavier University.
Stephen Vermeersch, CTP Investment Operations Analyst
Stephen J. Vermeersch is an Investment Operations Analyst for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 5 years of investment experience. Prior to that, he was an investment professional in the same position for Delta Dental of Michigan prior to splitting off in the formation of Red Cedar Investment Management. His responsibilities comprise of cash forecasting, manager & trade analysis, and general coordination with vendors & clients. He is a Certified Treasury Professional® (CTP) and member of the Association for Financial Professionals. Mr. Vermeersch graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Finance.
Chris Hagan Investment Analyst
Christopher R. Hagan is an Investment Analyst for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 2 years of investment related experience. After two summer internships at Delta Dental of Michigan working in their Investment Department, he was hired on as a full-time analyst in January 2017 before making the successful transition over to Red Cedar Investment Management in April 2018. As Investment & Treasury Analyst, Mr. Hagan performs analytical assignments including daily cash reconciliation, investment reports for both internal and external use, preparing presentations for the various committees Red Cedar Investment Management is involved with, and assists with researching potential new securities and funds for the managed portfolios. Mr. Hagan graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. in Applied Mathematical Economics and a minor in Finance.
Samantha Rusler Investment Analyst
Samantha R. Rusler is an Investment Analyst for Red Cedar Investment Management. Ms. Rusler joined Red Cedar in 2019 after graduating from Xavier University with a B.S in Finance and B.A. in Spanish. While at Xavier, she served as a Healthcare Analyst and as Chief Investment Officer of the student-managed D’Artagnan Capital Fund. As an Investment Analyst, Ms. Rusler performs research for Red Cedar Fixed Income strategies with a focus on structured products.
Michael Feldhaus Director of Sales and Marketing
Michael D. Feldhaus is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 19 years of investment related experience. As a member of the investment team, he oversees business development, consultant relations and marketing efforts on behalf of the firm. Prior to that, he served in a similar position as Senior Investment Specialist for ClearArc Capital. Mr. Feldhaus began his career with Fifth Third Investment Advisors (an affiliated company of ClearArc Capital) in 2000 working within the Institutional Services division. He held various investment-related positions at ClearArc Capital from 2001- 2018 including Director of Intermediary Sales from 2004-2010 and as Institutional Sales Director from 2010-2016. Mr. Feldhaus graduated from Furman University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and holds an MBA with a Finance concentration from Xavier University.
Michael Davidson Chief Administrative Officer
Mike Davidson is the Chief Administrative Officer for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 24 years of industry experience. He started with the Chicago branch of HSI Inc, installing local area networks and programming point-of-sale systems in hotels and restaurants across the US. From there, Mike moved to the Michigan Department of Education where he developed and maintained some of the earliest externally-facing web applications. Mike left MDE to join Rare Bird Inc, a marketing and design firm in Indianapolis, IN. He returned to the State of Michigan, working for the Department of Information Technology as a dedicated resource for the Office of State Aid and School Finance. Mike designed and developed the Taxable Value Management System, which allowed County Treasurers to submit tax data for use in the calculation and payment of state funds to school districts. In 2006, Mike joined Delta Dental Plan of Michigan as a Software Designer/Implementer. In 2017, Mike became the first Solution Architect at the company.
Brandy Kline Compliance and Administrative Specialist
Brandy R. Kline is legal, compliance and operational support for Red Cedar Investment Management and has 15 years of experience in legal, compliance and/or corporate operations. Prior to joining Red Cedar, she served in various roles at Delta Dental Plan of Michigan, Red Cedar’s sister company, including her latest position managing the compliance operations for Delta Dental’s federal funded business. Her responsibilities included working side-by-side with the CCO and leadership to implement and maintain a complex compliance program, including effective policies and procedures, corporate governance, auditing and monitoring, risk management, contract management, and enterprise-wide employee training. Mrs. Kline started her college endeavors to become a dental hygienist at Lansing Community College, but later pursued business administration at Davenport University. She also holds several certifications, including a National Paralegal Certification, Business Law Certification and is currently pursuing the Investment Adviser Certified Compliance Professional (IACCP) designation with an expected completion date of July 2020.
